Top 7 Mistakes to Avoid When Installing CCTV at Your Business (And How to Fix Them)

A CCTV system is only as good as its installation. We have walked into countless businesses where the cameras were premium models from Hikvision or Dahua, yet the entire setup was failing because of simple installation mistakes that could have been avoided.

Here are the seven most common mistakes we still see every week, and exactly how to fix them.

Mistake 1: Poor Camera Placement

Cameras pointed too high capture only the tops of heads. Cameras facing direct sunlight wash out faces. Cameras placed too close to the ceiling miss the action below. Fix this by walking through your space first and identifying every entry point, cash counter, valuable area, and blind spot before mounting anything.

Mistake 2: Skipping Surveillance-Grade Hard Drives

Regular desktop hard drives are not built for 24x7 recording. They overheat, fail, and you lose footage exactly when you need it. Use Seagate Skyhawk or WD Purple drives designed for continuous surveillance workloads.

Mistake 3: Using Low Quality Cables

Cheap CCTV cables develop faults within months, especially in outdoor runs. Footage starts flickering, then drops completely. Always use proper copper coaxial cable for analog systems and CAT6 for IP cameras. The savings on cheap cable are never worth the cost of fixing it later.

Mistake 4: Ignoring Power Supply Quality

A good camera on a weak SMPS will fail randomly. Voltage fluctuations are common in India, and they damage cameras silently over time. Invest in a quality SMPS with surge protection, or better, run PoE.

Mistake 5: No UPS for the NVR

Power cuts are normal. If your NVR shuts down every time, your hard drive lifespan drops sharply and you miss footage during outages. A small UPS that keeps the NVR running for 30 to 60 minutes solves this completely.

Mistake 6: Weak Default Passwords

Most break-ins into CCTV systems happen because installers leave the default password unchanged. Change the admin password the day your system is installed. Enable two-step verification if your brand supports it.

Mistake 7: No Maintenance Schedule

Dust, spider webs, fogged lenses, and loose cables silently degrade your system. A quick check every 3 months keeps your investment performing at its best.

Avoiding these seven mistakes is the difference between a CCTV system that protects your business and one that fails you at the worst moment.
