IP Camera vs HD Camera — The Real Difference Explained
This is the question we get asked most often at our Purasaiwakkam showroom. Customers walk in knowing they need CCTV cameras but unsure whether to go with the traditional HD coaxial system or upgrade to IP network cameras. The honest answer is: it depends on your situation, your budget, and how you plan to use the system. Here is a plain-language breakdown.
What is an HD Camera (AHD / TVI / CVI)?
HD CCTV cameras — also called analog HD or AHD cameras — transmit video through coaxial cable (RG59 or RG6) to a DVR. They are available in 2MP (1080p), 5MP, and 8MP (4K) resolutions. The cable runs from each camera directly to the DVR located at a central point. HD cameras are simple to install, durable, and excellent value for money. Power is supplied separately through a power cable.
What is an IP Camera (PoE)?
IP cameras transmit digital video data over a standard Cat6 network cable to a PoE switch and then to an NVR. The big advantage is that a single Cat6 cable carries both the video signal and the power supply — no separate power cable needed. IP cameras generally offer higher resolution (4MP, 8MP, 12MP), better zoom quality, and more advanced features like built-in audio, facial detection, and license plate recognition.
HD Camera vs IP Camera — Side by Side Comparison
Cable type: HD uses coaxial (RG59), IP uses Cat6. Recorder: HD uses DVR, IP uses NVR. Resolution: Both now go up to 8MP (4K). Price: HD systems cost 20 to 30 percent less than equivalent IP systems. Cable distance: HD coaxial runs up to 500 metres, Cat6 limited to 100 metres without extension. Power: HD needs separate power cable, IP PoE cable carries power. Audio: IP cameras mostly have built-in mic, HD cameras usually require separate audio cable. Flexibility: IP cameras can connect to any PoE switch or network, HD is proprietary.
Which Should You Choose for Your Chennai Property?
Choose HD cameras if: Your budget is tight and you need a reliable basic system. You have long cable runs exceeding 100 metres (factory, large warehouse, campus). You already have coaxial cable pre-wired in your building. You need a simple system with minimal networking complexity.
Choose IP cameras if: You need high-resolution footage above 4MP for licence plate reading, facial identification, or large-area monitoring. Your building is already Cat6 networked. You want advanced AI features like people counting, intrusion detection, or heatmaps. You are setting up a professional office, retail chain, warehouse, or hotel.
Can You Mix HD and IP Cameras?
No — HD cameras need a DVR and IP cameras need an NVR. They cannot be mixed on the same recorder. If you have an existing HD system and want to add IP cameras, you would need a separate NVR or a hybrid recorder that supports both. We stock hybrid DVRs at our store for customers who want to upgrade gradually.
