How to Choose the Right Hard Disk for Your CCTV System - Capacity & Brand Guide

The hard disk is one of the most critical components of your CCTV system. It is where all your recorded footage is stored. Choosing the wrong capacity means running out of storage too quickly — or losing crucial footage before you need it. Here is how to choose the right one.

Why You Need a Surveillance-Grade Hard Disk

Regular desktop hard drives are not designed for the 24/7 continuous write operations required by CCTV DVR and NVR systems. Surveillance-grade HDDs from Seagate (SkyHawk) and Western Digital (Purple) are specifically engineered for continuous recording, higher vibration tolerance, and longer lifespan in security applications.

Using a standard desktop HDD in your DVR will likely result in drive failure within 6-12 months. Always use a surveillance-rated drive.

How to Calculate Storage Capacity

The storage you need depends on:

Number of cameras (more cameras = more data).

Recording resolution (4MP uses more space than 2MP).

Frames per second (FPS) setting.

Recording schedule (24/7 vs motion-only).

Quick reference guide:

4 cameras at 2MP, 24/7 recording = approximately 1TB per month.

8 cameras at 4MP, 24/7 recording = approximately 2-3TB per month.

16 cameras at 4MP, motion-triggered recording = approximately 1-2TB per month.

For 30 days of footage with 8 cameras at 4MP: recommend 4TB to 6TB storage.

Popular Hard Disk Choices

1TB Surveillance HDD: Suitable for 4-camera systems with 15-30 days storage.

2TB Surveillance HDD: Standard choice for 8-camera home systems.

4TB Surveillance HDD: Best for 8-16 camera office setups with 30-60 days retention.

6TB / 8TB: Enterprise CCTV setups with high-resolution cameras.

KRYSTA Micro SD 64GB Memory Cards: For standalone Wi-Fi cameras and solar cameras that record to SD card instead of DVR.
