Most people overthink their first CCTV purchase. They open ten tabs, read fifty reviews, compare every brand, and end up more confused than when they started. Here is a brutally simple 60-second framework we use ourselves when a customer cannot decide.
Step 1: Indoor or Outdoor? (10 seconds)
Indoor goes with dome cameras. Outdoor goes with bullet cameras. Mixed locations use both. That is it. Skip every other camera shape for now.
Step 2: How Far Do You Need to See? (10 seconds)
Less than 10 metres, choose 2.8mm lens. 10 to 20 metres, choose 3.6mm lens. More than 20 metres, choose 6mm or higher. This single decision affects clarity more than megapixels.
Step 3: What Is the Risk Level? (10 seconds)
Low risk locations like a homely shop or office? 2MP is enough. Medium risk like a jewellery counter, electronics store, godown? Choose 4MP or 5MP. High risk or large area? Go 8MP.
Step 4: Day or Night Priority? (10 seconds)
If your premises stays bright after sunset, any IR camera works. If it gets fully dark, choose Starlight or ColorVu cameras. The difference in night footage is dramatic.
Step 5: Wired or Wireless? (10 seconds)
Single floor, easy cable run, business premises: wired PoE. Multiple floors or difficult cable run: Wi-Fi. No internet at the location: 4G.
Step 6: Storage Need (10 seconds)
Most businesses need 30 days. 4 cameras at 2MP need around 2TB. 8 cameras at 5MP need around 6TB. Use Seagate Skyhawk or WD Purple, never desktop drives.
That is your full system. Six questions, sixty seconds, one decision.
If you want to skip even this and just get the right setup delivered and installed at a fair price, our team at SBM Technologies builds custom packages every day. Share your location size and risk level on WhatsApp or call us, and we will quote you a complete system in 10 minutes.
