If you have shopped for a CCTV camera recently, the salesperson almost certainly tried to upsell you from 5MP to 8MP. The pitch is always the same: more megapixels means more detail. But is that actually true in real-world conditions, or are you paying extra for numbers on a box?
After installing thousands of cameras in homes, shops, factories and warehouses across India, here is the truthful answer.
What 5MP and 8MP Actually Mean
A 5MP camera captures roughly 2592 by 1944 pixels. An 8MP, often called 4K, captures around 3840 by 2160 pixels. On paper, 8MP gives you about 50 percent more detail. In practice, that gap is smaller than most buyers expect because of several real-world factors.
When 8MP Is Genuinely Worth It
For large open areas like parking lots, godowns, school grounds, factory floors, or wide shop frontages, 8MP is a real upgrade. You can zoom into faces and number plates with confidence weeks later. If forensic-grade evidence matters to your business, 8MP earns its price.
When 5MP Is the Smarter Choice
For most homes, small shops, offices, clinics, and corridors, a good 5MP camera with a quality sensor outperforms a budget 8MP camera every single time. Sensor size, lens quality, and image processing matter more than raw resolution. A cheap 8MP camera in low light often looks worse than a premium 5MP one.
The Hidden Cost Nobody Tells You
8MP cameras produce much larger video files. That means you need a bigger hard drive, often double the storage, and a more powerful NVR. Your bandwidth requirement also goes up if you stream remotely. Budget for the full system, not just the camera.
The Honest Recommendation
If your budget is fixed, spend it on better brand, better lens, and better night vision rather than chasing megapixels. A premium 5MP setup will serve you better than a cheap 8MP one for the next five years.
